Taliban Authorities and Pakistan Claim Numerous Deaths in Recent Border Fighting
Fresh fighting erupted along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border early on Wednesday, with both parties blaming the opposing side of starting deadly confrontations.
The Pakistani armed forces announced that its troops had eliminated "fifteen to twenty Afghan Taliban" and injured numerous others in the Spin Boldak district border district.
A Afghan authorities spokesman claimed that twelve Afghan civilians had been fatally struck and more than 100 wounded by artillery from Pakistan. He further stated that numerous military personnel had been killed. None of the reported fatalities could be independently confirmed.
Violence between the neighbouring countries has flared since explosions rocked Afghanistan last week, which the Afghan capital attributed on Pakistan. The Taliban deny claims that it is harboring armed groups targeting Pakistan.
Online Platforms and Armed Engagements
The two sides are not only fighting for the upper hand on the border, but also on digital platforms, attempting to convince the general population that their faction is inflicting greater losses.
The most recent clashes come after severe cross-border confrontations over the past few days, when the Taliban claimed to have eliminated 58 members of the Islamabad's armed forces and Pakistan reported it neutralized two hundred "Taliban and linked insurgents". The claimed death tolls provided by both parties could not be independently verified.
A few days of unstable calm that had lasted since the recent days were shattered on Wednesday morning.
On-the-Ground Reports and Impact
Footage purportedly of the conflict and its aftermath have been circulated on the internet and on messaging groups, including images claiming to be of those deceased and blurry shots from low-light cameras claiming to be of check posts destroyed. These recordings have not been authenticated.
A source in the border area in Afghanistan reported that clashes erupted at around 04:00 local time (23:30 GMT on the previous day). Another local in Spin Boldak, who lives about one kilometre away from the frontier post, said that "intense hostilities continued for almost five hours".
"We observed unmanned aircraft and jets soaring over us, a number of our family members are injured," they added.
A medical professional in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak reported that he counted "seven fatalities and thirty-six injured transported to the medical center", including males, women and children.
The situation were "strained" and additional casualties were being transferred to hospital, he said.
Evacuations and International Responses
A regional authority figure in Spin Boldak stated that "numerous of households have been forced to flee since last night due to the intense clashes". He said they were on "maximum readiness" after a several military positions were targeted by Pakistani jets. He further indicated that they had the bodies of two Pakistani military members.
In a separate overnight clash on the north-western border, the Islamabad's forces claimed that 25 to 30 Taliban and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "suspected" to have been killed.
The clashes have prompted calls for reduced tensions from foreign nations including China and Moscow, as well as a suggestion from US President Donald Trump that he could intervene to facilitate a ceasefire.
On that day, Richard Bennett, UN special rapporteur on the conditions of civil liberties in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by reports of non-combatant deaths and displacement because of the clashes.
"I urge everyone involved to exercise the utmost caution, safeguard civilians, and follow international law," he stated.
Long-Standing Tensions
Islamabad has for years alleged the Afghan Taliban of permitting the Pakistani militants to operate from their land and fight against the Islamabad government in an effort to impose a strict religion-based system of governance.
The Taliban leadership has consistently denied these allegations.
