United Nations Security Council members approved to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his presidential meeting the coming week.

He became interim leader subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that removed Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, ending over a decade of civil war.

The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under global penalties in his role as head of the religious organization HTS, which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities in July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the penalties, posting on social media: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and allied countries for backing of Syria and its people."

His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria before he cut connections in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

In his speech, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
